Obituaries

Gurr,Wilbert son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gurr, who has suffered intensely for a number of weeks from brights disease, super induced by an attack of scarlet fever over a year ago, was released from his suffering Monday morning. Everything that medical skill could do was done for the lad, and at times it seemed that he ultimately would recover, but as time went on he became weaker and finally was unable to withstand the ravishes of the disease, suffering intensely constantly for the past two months. He was a bright young fellow, the pride of his parents and in his afflictions was patient and uncomplaining. Funeral services were held yesterday at the family residence.  Parowan Times April 26, 1916

Haddon, Sarah Ann Carter-------Thursday afternoon Sarah Ann Carter Haddon, an aged lady of this city, passed away after a short illness, having succumbed to general debility and old age. She was born in Adams County, Illinois, June 5, 1827, and came to Utah in 1851 by on team in the Captain Mace Company She remained in Salt Lake until the fall of 1853 when she with other emigrants, came to this valley and after living here for several years went with her husband and children to Castledale, Utah After living at the last named place until 1893, her husband's death coming that year, she and her children moved back to Parowan, which place she has made her home from that time to the present. She was highly respected, and numbered her friends by the score, and was a mother of 10 children, 8 of whom survive her She leaves in addition to her children 54 grandchildren, 114 great grand children, and 12 great great grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and clung to that faith constantly through all her many trials that she was forced to undergo in the early settlement of Utah. The children left to mourn her departure are Rachel Applegate, Circleville, Utah Louisa Mortenson Parowan, Wm Haddon, Uinta, John Haddon, Idaho, Matilda Hooper, Idaho, Arminta Lidley, Colton, Utah. Ellen Rose and Francis Haddon, Idaho. Several of her children were at her bedside when the end came, and sincerely mourn the loss of a loving mother. Funeral services were held in the tabernacle Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock.  Parowan Times June 21, 1916.

Norris, William -----Another of our aged citizens was called to the Great Beyond a week ago last Monday morning, namely William Norris, who had, been ailing for some months past with the troubles incident to old age, having reached the advanced age of eighty years. He was born in Bristol, England, September, 1836. He joined the Latter-day Saints church while a young man and remained firm in that faith until his death. He came to Utah in 1835 and made Parowan his home and resided here ever since. He married Harriet Jackson, and from the union was born six sons and seven daughters. His wife preceded him to the other shore some years ago, and since her death his daughter, Mrs.  Harriet Decker has ministered to his wants, and made him comfortable in his declining years. William Norris held several positions of trust, among them being city treasurer and justice of the peace.  He was an upright, unassuming, industrious man, and highly respected by all who were acquainted with him. Funeral services were held in the tabernacle Oct. 20, and the following gentlemen spoke of the excellent character of the deceased, and offered condolences and sympathy to those who are left to mourn: Silas J. Ward, James Ollerton and Morgan Richards. A sacred duet was rendered by Miss Ada McGregor and Lawrence Adams.  Parowan Times October 27, 1915

Oliver, Mr. Last week there passed from this stage of action one of the residents of this city, who was held in high respect by all who knew him. For several years he has been incapacitated from work because of advanced age, being 83 years old.  He was one of the men who years ago near Buckhorn was connected with the defense of the people from the Indians raids, after which he came to Parowan and has lived here ever since. For the past fifteen years he has been living with the family of Charles Adams, who has taken care of him and attended to all his wants during his declining years. Mr. Oliver was a hardworking, industrious man, unmarried and far as is known has few relatives, whose whereabouts are practically unknown. Funeral services of a simple nature were held last Friday and the remains interred in the cemetery.  Parowan Times November 24, 1915

Rasmussen, Lloyd -----Last Thursday night at about 11 o'clock the spirit of Lloyd Rasmussen took its flight to realms above. Lloyd is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Rasmussen, and was a very bright and loveable young boy, being nearly 12 years old at the time of his death.  He had been ailing for several months past, and last summer suffered with an attach of rheumatic fever which later developed into dropsy, which disease was the direct cause of the untimely death.  Funeral services were held in the tabernacle Sunday afternoon.  The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved parents in their hour of sorrow.  Parowan Times February 9, 1916

Riding, Mrs. Alice Stevens ---Funeral Services were held at Friday afternoon with Bishop Hans P. Ipson conducting the services.  Alice Stevens Riding, the eldest daughter of Edmund and Emily Hearst Stevens was born at Parowan, Utah, November 14, 1895.  At the age of six years her mother died leaving her and two younger sisters to the care and custody of their father.  On September 3, 1904 she was baptized into the Mormon church by Elder William H. Orton and confirmed September 4, by Bishop Morgan Richards at Parowan.  On October 8, 1919, she was married to Jed A. Riding of this place where they have since made their home, two children were born to this union, Arthur J., two years old, and a baby girl of but a few hours old when her mother died, besides her husband and the children, she is survived by her father, Edmund Stevens, and his wife Etta Stevens, and the following brothers and sisters Mrs. Lucy Foreman of Beaver, Utah, Mrs. Mabel Wilcock, Frank, Albert, Robert, Grant, and Miss Della Stevens of Parowan.  Alice was of a quiet disposition, kind and considerate, full of love and affection and was greatly loved by all who knew her.  She will be greatly missed.  Garfield County News July 20, 1923
